1. What Foot Traffic Counter Does
Foot Traffic Counter lets you record real-world foot traffic by tapping buttons as people move past you. Each tap creates a structured observation with:
- Gender
- Age band
- Group type
- Direction
- Engagement
- Purpose
- Mobility
- Pace
- Optional photos, video and audio
- Timestamp and location
- Optional custom fields
The app stores all observations in a session and provides charts to help you understand what you recorded.
You can also export your results in multiple formats that are ready for professional analysis.
2. Starting a New Session
- Tap Start New Session
- Enter a location name
- Begin observing as people move through the space
You can pause or end the session at any time.
3. Recording Observations
The recording screen shows a series of fields such as:
- Gender
- Age
- Group
- Direction
- Engagement
- Purpose
- Mobility
- Pace
- Pets
- Phone use
How to record an observation
- Watch an individual or group pass your location
- Tap the buttons that best describe what you observe
- Tap the Commit button to save the observation
You can undo the last observation easily using the Undo button.
4. Capturing Media
Foot Traffic Counter allows you to attach media to each observation.

- Tap Take Photo
- Capture the image
- It is linked to the correct observation
Video
- Tap Record Video
- Videos can be up to 30 seconds
- Saved in high quality
Audio
- Tap Record Audio
- A recording sheet appears
- Use Start and Stop to capture notes or ambient sound
Media files appear in exports and are stored alongside your observations.

Research Export
A ZIP file containing:
- sessions.csv
- observations.csv
- media.csv
- codebook.csv
- media folder with observation-linked filenames
This export is designed for researchers who use tools such as Excel, Tableau, Power BI, Looker, SPSS, Stata, R or Python.
7. Custom Fields
You can add custom sections in Settings. Each custom field behaves like a normal category and appears in analytics and exports.
